The 4Cs — Your Diamond Guide

Every diamond — lab-grown or mined — is graded on four universal criteria. Understanding them helps you find the best stone for your budget.

Cut

The most important of the 4Cs. Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets interact with light — not the shape. An Excellent or Ideal cut maximizes brilliance, fire, and scintillation. A poorly cut stone looks dull no matter how large or clear.

Color

Diamond color is graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). For white diamonds, D–F is colorless, G–J is near-colorless and offers excellent value. In yellow gold settings, H–I color is virtually indistinguishable from D.

Clarity

Clarity measures internal inclusions and surface blemishes. FL (Flawless) is the rarest; VS1–VS2 (Very Slightly Included) are eye-clean and offer great value. SI1 can be eye-clean too — ask us and we'll guide you.

Carat

What is the IGI?

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is the world's largest independent gemological laboratory. Founded in 1975, IGI has offices in Antwerp, New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, and more. For lab-grown diamonds, IGI is the most widely recognized and trusted grading authority.

What does an IGI certificate tell you?

Each certificate provides: the diamond's exact carat weight, color grade (D–Z), clarity grade (FL–I3), cut grade, polish, symmetry, fluorescence, measurements in millimeters, and a unique report number that can be verified online at igi.org.

Is IGI the same as GIA?

Both are respected independent labs. GIA is the original creator of the 4Cs grading system and is most associated with mined diamonds. IGI has become the leading standard specifically for lab-grown diamonds, with grading criteria designed for their unique characteristics.

How do I verify my certificate?

Every IGI report number is verifiable at igi.org/report. Enter your report number and the full grading details appear — this ensures the certificate is genuine and matches your stone.

Do all Mine²Mine pieces come with IGI certs?

Yes. All of our diamonds are individually IGI certified. You receive the certificate with your purchase. For multi-stone pieces like tennis bracelets and necklaces, we provide documentation for the total weight and average quality of the stones.

We accept returns within 30 days of delivery. The piece must be unworn, undamaged, and returned in its original packaging with the IGI certificate included.

Can I exchange instead of return?

Ring Sizing

The most common ring sizes for women are 5–7; for men, 8–10. To measure at home: wrap a thin strip of paper around your finger, mark where it meets, then measure the length in mm. Use the chart below:
